Abstract Objectives: The comparison between two mating designs i.e.: Partial diallel and Line x Testers to determine their accuracy in estimating GCA and SCA. The obtained hybrids would throw a light about the amounts of heterosis while the PCR technique would also throw a light about the similarity and dis-similarity between lines. Methods & Results: Methods: The utilization of seven inbred lines in a diallel cross and to use them also in another mating design as line x tester (three testers). The two mating designs would be compared for the accuracy of estimating the different genetic parameters. The utilization of PCR technique would present evidence about the similarity or dis-similarity of lines. Results: The important results obtained indicated that heterosis is of common occurrence in corn with variable amounts according to different traits. The two mating designs are suitable to estimate genetic parameters although diallel was more accurate in estimating SCA while line x tester was accurate in estimating GCA. PCR technique grouped the lines into two main groups. The phenotypic correlation indicated that yield component traits are highly correlated. Thus, the selection for one trait would improve the other. Conclusion: It appeared that both mating designs would estimate the different genetic parameters although they were different in their accuracy in estimating GCA and SCA. The PCR technique presented evidence about the similarity and dis-similarity of the utilized inbred lines. |
