Abstract

This study involved 45 patients with primary hepatic malignancy managed by hepatic resection at Gastro-entrology Surgical Center, Mansora University (43 cases) and Gastro-intestinal and laparoscopic surgery unit ”A”, General Surgery Department, Tanta University Hospital 2 cases) during the period from January 2008 to June 2009 with patients follow up extended till the end of December 2010.The mean age of the studied group was 55.1±10.2 years (ranging between 20 and 70 years). The majority of the studied group was males (68.9%). Thirty-one patients (68.9%) came from rural provinces versus 14 patients (31.1 %) residing in urban areas: The most common symptom in the studied group was pain (71.1 %) followed by weight loss (31.1 %). The liver condition was incidentally discovered on doing abdominal ultrasonography in 24.4% of cases. Hepatitis C infection was found 84.4% of patients. Two patients (4.4%) had hepatitis B infection (both cases have HCV as well) and 7 patients were free of both hepatitis Band C (15.6%). Most of the patients, 40 cases (88.9%) were of Child-Pugh class A, while 5 cases (11.1 %) were of Child-Pugh class B. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy diagnosed esophageal varices in 9 patients (20.0%). The median Alpha fetoprotein (AFP) level was 50 ng/ml, ranging between 1 and 17200 ngiml.
