Abstract

Aim of study: to assess nursing department of Ain Shams maternity university hospital readiness to the hospital accreditation process develop and test enhancement program to support them for accreditation process.
Design: intervention study design was used.
Setting: the study will be conducted at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital (at inpatient, outpatient and emergency departments).
Subjects and methods: A convenient sample of 180 nurses working at the previous mentioned setting of the maternity hospital were included in the study .Data were collected through three types of tools that were used for data collection related to this study (Accreditation background assessment tool, Accreditation practical standards assessment tool (for nurses) , Accreditation practical standards assessment tool (for nursing managers),In addition to supportive materials for hospital accreditation enhancement program; It was distributed during the enhancement program which was implemented in the postnatal units.
Results: -the main results of the study are limited knowledge of most of the studied nurses regarding hospital accreditation especially among inpatient units also it was obvious that only 17.3% of the studied nurses were probably met nursing care standards as specified in accreditation standards and only one fifth of the nursing managers were probably met specified nursing management standards . the study revealed that the enhancement program at inpatient unit has an obvious effect in increasing the percentage of nurses had satisfactory knowledge , proper performance regard hospital accreditation process , standards .
Conclusion and recommendations: The nurses and the nursing mangers in the study had low knowledge and performance score regarding hospital accreditation standards. The enhancement program that implemented in the inpatient unit significantly improves knowledge and performance of inpatient group of studied nurses regarding accreditation standards.
Based on the findings, the following is recommended; Provide educational program about accreditation and its standards at the other hospitals’ departments. Further researches are still needed to explore the barriers that confront the implementation of the accreditation standards in the nursing department as well as to suggest strategies to sustain the accreditation standards implementation overtime.
