Abstract This study is carried out to review the available literatures concerning total quality management in psychiatric hospitals . In mental health care, quality is a measure of whether services increase the likelihood of desired mental health outcomes and are consistent with current evidence-based practice. US department of health suggests a step-by-step program to assist countries to improve the quality of mental health care , which includes seven steps. The design of the psychiatric hospitals and their rooms must fulfill certain criteria to assure safety of the patients and their comfort . The personnels in psychiatric health care , they not only include psychiatrists , but also include nurses , clinical psychologists , school psychiatrists , behavioral analysts and social workers . Each of these groups need special training and certification besides having their own standards according to their role . The Center for Quality Improvement of the Royal College of Psychiatrists have postulated standards for Accreditation for Inpatient Mental Health Services (AIMS) . The full set of these standards is aspirational and it is unlikely that any ward would meet all of them .Each standard has been categorized as Type 1 , Type 2 and Type 3 . |
