Abstract

Nowadays, automobile makers will be required to produce new technologies ‎that improve automotive performance while still satisfying the ever increasing ‎comfort demand of drivers. On the other hand, one of the best ways for ‎achievement of conventional vehicle changing to hybrid case is trustworthy ‎simulation result and using of driving realities. For this objective, the present ‎work investigates the vehicular performance characteristics of alternative ‎vehicle types. The vehicular performance characteristics of three types of ‎alternatives have been presented. The first alternative is theoretically studied for ‎hybrid electric vehicle performance characteristics evaluated based on highway ‎driving cycle, while the second alternative is also theoretically studied for hybrid ‎electric vehicle and evaluated based on urban driving cycle. The third alternative ‎is designed, constructed; based on extra urban driving cycle and studied ‎theoretically and experimentally for battery electric vehicle.‎
A historical review of the available published work has been introduced and ‎showed the need for further research work in this area. The comprehensive ‎vehicle theoretical and experimental analysis techniques are presented which ‎describe the way of dealing with the alternative vehicle performance are given. ‎The experimental setup, instrumentation system, construction, design and test ‎procedure are presented. In addition, the description of the types of standard ‎driving cycles and vehicles used is included.
In addition, in this study a practical prototype of a battery electric vehicle ‎‎(BEV) was designed and constructed to represent an example of the ‎alternative fuel vehicles. The battery electric vehicle (BEV) specifications can ‎be briefed in using a DC electric motor, 15 HP, 3200 rpm, operating on 72 ‎volt DC, while for the source of energy a specific type of batteries was used ‎‎(US 8VGC XC deep cycle lead acid batteries for the 8V 170 amp hours (AH)). ‎Depending on the calculations, eight batteries were fitted in the electric ‎vehicle, and this would give a battery pack of 10.88 kWh. The batteries have ‎been configured in two rows of eight series connected batteries creating a ‎battery pack of 64V and 170 AH. According to the theoretical calculations and ‎experimental tests, the battery electric vehicle attains a maximum velocity of ‎‎70 km/h. In addition, the present study conducted a set of experimental tests ‎were carried out to evaluate the performance of implemented battery electric ‎vehicle during a various operating conditions. ‎
The results indicate that the theoretical simulation information were found to ‎be compatible with those of experimental information of the designed prototype. ‎Furthermore, the type of alternative vehicles shows extreme benefits of ‎performance for electric and hybrid vehicles to contribute good design.‎
