Abstract

this study was conducted to evalute the the biochemical value of matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MJ\1P¬3) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in diagnosis and prognosis of schistosoma related and non-schistosoma related bladder cancer in Egypt.
Patients and methods: 70 bladder cancer patients and 12 healthy controls were included in the study. Bladder cancer patients were classified into two groups, the first group was schistosoma related bladder cancer patients (36 patients) which divided according to histopathology into T1¬T2 and T3-T4 subgroups. The second group was non¬schistosoma related bladder cancer patients (34 patients) which divided according to histopathology into T1-T2 and T3-T4 subgroups. Urinary levels of MMP-3 and MMP-9 were determined in all groups using ELISA technique. Urine sediments were also used for cytological examination.
Results: The mean urinary levels of both MMP-3 and MMP-9 for each group either schistosoma related or non¬schistosoma related were significantly elevated in all bladder cancer patients compared with control group. For MMP-3, it was found that the mean urinary level was significantly elevated in both subgroups T1-T2 or T3-T4 of schistosoma related and non-schistosoma related bladder cancer patients with sensitivity 92.9% and specificity 91. 7%.
