Abstract This study was to evaluate the effects of sodium arsenite exposure during gestation and lactation of female rats on the following points in the newlyborn rats on neurobehavioural, coordination skills, anxiety and depression, social interaction, aggression, learning, maternal ability fertility, biochemical and histopathological evaluation. Thirty (30) mature Wistar female rats weighing about 180-200g mated with fifteen (15) male rats weighing about 250-300g. Pregnant females were then divided at random into three groups of 10 animals each, and received Na-As at one of three different concentrations; 0 (control), 30 and 100 ppm. Sodium arsenite (Na-As) was incorporated in drinking water and administered to pregnant rats for a 28 days period. After weaning, all pups were then collected and distributed into 3 groups of 40 animals each, divided on 4 replicates, as following control, low and high groups. This study confirms a wide variety of adverse health outcomes linked to arsenic exposure due it’s to capability to induce oxidative damage of rats. |
