Abstract Thyroid hormone has profound effects on the cardiovascular system and a regulatory effect on the rate of heme oxidation in the liver. Inducible isoform of heme oxygenase (HO-I) protects the heart and vasculature in pathological conditions. The present study aimed at investigating the role of heme oxygenase in cardiac changes in thyroidectomized rats administered hemin (as HO inducer) or ketoconazole (KTZ) (as HO inhibitor). Sixty male Wistar rats were divided into the following groups: Group I (Control group), 30 rats were equally divided into 3 subgroups: Group la (Sham operated group), Group Ib (Sham operate & Hemin-treated group) and Group leSham operated & KTZ-treated group), Group II (Thyroidectomized group), Group III (Thyroidectomized & Hemin-treated group) and Group IV (Thyroidectomized & KTZ-treated group). Hypothyroidism is documented by significant decrease in T 3 accompanied with significant increase in serum TSH levels in thyroidectomized rats. |
