Abstract OBJECTIVES: 1-To study the influence of salinity levels on seed germination characters of wheat. 2-To study wheat cultivars performance germination under salinity stress in case of determine the suitable cultivar tolerant to salinity. 3-To study the interaction effect, between both salinity levels and wheat cultivars on seed germination and seedling wheat after germination. METHODS AND RESALTS: The experiment was conducted at Giza Central Seed Testing laboratory of Central Administration for Seed Testing and Certification (CASC), Ministry of Agriculture, Egypt during the period of February to April 2012 to study the response of eleven cultivars of wheat to germination under salinity stress and to confirm the seedling growth performance to examine a range of genetic variability for salinity tolerance with NaCl concentrations levels: (EC) 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 dS/m-1NaCl among eleven bread wheat cultivars were selected i.e. Sakha 93, Sakha 94, Gemmeiza 7, Gemmeiza 9, Gemmeiza 10, Giza 168, Sids 1, Misr 1, Misr 2, Egaseed 3, Egaseed 7. Wheat seeds of this study were obtained from Agriculture Research Center except Egaseed cultivars were obtained from private company. Seeds were stored at laboratory conditions in cloth bags inside plastic bags under laboratory conditions. The following characters were recorded: A- Germination parameters: Final germination percentage (%). - Germination rate (day).- Germination index (%).- Seedling vigor index (%). B- Seedling parameters: Shoot length (cm).- Root length (cm).- Shoot fresh weight (g).- Root fresh weight (g).- Shoot dry weight (g). - Root dry weight (g).- Seedling height reduction (%).- Relative dry weight (%). CONCLUSION It could be concluded that for maximizing wheat germination characters and seedling parameters under salinity stress are producing by using wheat cultivars i.e. Sakha 93 and Sakha 94 cultivars with increasing salinity concentrations levels up to 14 dS/m-1 NaCl. These cultivars were more tolerant to salinity and recommended to use in breeding programe for enhancing wheat production in Egypt. |
