Abstract Obesity is a global health problem with increasing prevalence. Over weight and obesity are major risk factors for CVD, cancer, Diabetes mellitus. GDM is associated with maternal, fetal and neonatal mortality and morbidity. Aim of the work: The present prospective cohort study is carried out to investigate the relationship between, central fat distribution (exemplified by WHR and WC) and gestational glucose tolerance. Methodology: The study comprises 300 preimigravidae with no risk factors for GDM. The subjects are subjected for history taking general, abdominal and local examination, US, investigation in addition to OGTT (100 glucose load) at 3 antenatal visits (at 9 – 12 W, 20 – 26w and 36 w). Results: The study showed no abnormal findings at the first ANC visit. At the second visit 5 cases of GDM are detected among obese women. At 3rd ANC, 21 cases of GDM are reported, giving a prevalence rate of GDM of 7.0%. The study showed a statistically significant positive. Correlation between WC & WHR & development of GDM . WHR was the best predictor of GDM with the highest sensitivity & specificity. |
