Abstract

Three large scale experiments were designed to investigate the possible effects of different stressful factors (salinity, temperature and radiation) on some aspects of growth, development and metabolism of broad bean plants. Exposure of broad bean plants to the stressful conditions induced pronounced significant changes in growth parameters, pigment fractions and PSII activity. Also there are significant variable changes in the carbohydrate and nitrogen pools. There are significant, in general, increase in the amino acid contents (glycine and proline) and organic acids (keto, citric and oxalic acids). There are significant increases in nucleic acids and changes in protein banding pattern were apparent. Also there are significant, in general, increase in lipid peroxidation and ion leakage. There are significant variable increases in total phenolic compounds as well as in anthocyanin contents. There are significant increases in the antioxidant (enzymic and non-enzymic) system.
