Abstract The aim of this work was to determine the prevalence of electrolytes disturbances including Na, K, Ca and Mg in patients with stable bronchial asthma and patients with acute asthmatic attacks and to evaluate the role of MgSo4 infusion in treatment of acute severe asthma. This study was carried out over a period of 8 months from 1st of December 2008 to 31th of July 2009, on 100 patients with history of bronchial asthma who were presented and/or admitted to chest department of El-Minia University hospital after obtaining their consent. The subjects in this work were divided into 2 groups according to the predominating signs and symptoms; group I with stable bronchial asthma and group II with acute asthmatic attack. There was a significant difference in serum potassium and magnesium levels in group II patients compared with group I patients, while there was no significant difference between the two groups regarding serum sodium or calcium levels. In group II patients, improvement was observed after MgSo4 infusion. Significant increase in all the parameters of PFTs were observed after MgSo4 infusion. |
