Abstract

Aggression by mentally ill patients has been recognized as a significant clinical
problem that has received widespread attention in psychiatric settings. Aggressive
behavior is an obstacle for successful reintegration of patients into the community and
prolongs their institutionalization and increases discrimination and stigma. Thus it is of
great importance to identify precipitants or correlates associated with aggressive incidents.
The study aimed to identify causes of aggression among psychiatric inpatients as
perceived by patients, psychiatrists and nurses. The study subjects were consisted of 75
patients, 13 psychiatrists and 40 nurses from psychiatric inpatients units of Mental Health
Hospital in Port-said city. Three structured interview schedules were developed and
utilized to collect the necessary data. The study results revealed that, there were
statistically significant differences among patients, psychiatrists and nurses perceptions in
relation to the causes of psychiatric inpatient aggression. Patients and nurses almost
equally emphasized the roles of hospital staff-related causes, while psychiatrists
emphasized the roles of environment-related causes.
