Abstract The most common wind turbines in operation today generate power from two or three blades revolving around a horizontal axis and are mounted on towers. Such horizontal-axis wind turbines usually include a gearbox, a generator, and other supporting mechanical and electrical equipment. This research suggests a new method of increasing the performance of the Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) that is by installing a model consisting of two turbines on the same shaft in front of a wind tunnel and to study the performance of this arrangement. In the beginning of this research the meaning of the wind energy was demonstrated in addition to the advantages of using this energy in life and the applications of wind energy. Also different types of wind turbines were introduced and the mean components of the typical wind turbine. Also the plane of the research was introduced and the basic approach of the research. Also, the research showed the studies involved within the present research topic. That is to be considered during the research. In addition, the research presented the test rig used to perform the experimental part of the research. The representation included schematic diagrams as well as photo for the main components of the test rig as well as a separate discussion for each part and the used measuring devices. The research also discussed the experimental procedure used through the research and introduced the achieved experimental results. The experiments were performed on two models Model (1) and Model (2) in order to study the effect of different operating parameters such as the blades geometry, the blade inlet angle, the effect of the down stream blades and the effect of air velocity change on the turbine performance. In this research the results and their importance were discussed. The results analysis proved that an improvement was achieved in the turbine performance as a result of the suggested arrangement that is by installing two turbines on the same horizontal axe. The indication for such improvement was the increase in the turbine efficiency which is represented by the turbine power coefficient. Also a recommendation for the future work related to this research was suggested. |
