Abstract Low plasticity burnishing (LPB) process is chipless finishing methods which easily produce a smooth and hardened surface by plastic deformation of surface irregularities. The pressure generated by the burnishing tool exceeds the yield point of the softer piece part surface at the point of contact resulting a small plastic deformation of the surface structure of the piece part. In thus research a burnishing tool was designed and fabricated, All parts of the burnishing tool was made of steel 60 except the Diaphragm was made of Steel 37 which has more elasticity to be more affected by the burnishing force, strain gauges used to measured the burnishing force by calibrated it. The present study focuses on the surface roughness and surface hardness aspects of mild steel work piece and the effect of burnishing parameters (burnishing feed, burnishing depth and burnishing speed) upon surface roughness, surface hardness and yield strength. It was found that by using LPB process surface hardness, surface roughness has been improved. It was also found that the burnishing force and work piece initial roughness are the most influencing parameters which have a significant effect on the work piece’s surface during low plasticity burnishing process. |
