Abstract In the last three decades, Port-Said city bas been largely developed. This development requires to replace old low rise buildings (three to four floors) with higher buildings (nine to twelve floors). However, raft foundation type bas been used for the most of new buildings in Port-Said. It bas been found due to the presence of clay layers that settlement bas exceeded the allowable value and caused problems for the new building itself as well as damages for the surrounding old buildings. This thesis searches for another foundation system that overcomes settlement problem in Port-Said. Piled raft and pile group foundation types have been studied in the thesis as settlement reducers. For achievement of the task, the new reclamation areas in Port-Said were subdivided into six major zones. In each zone typical soil stratification and properties were considered. Back analysis has been carried out to verify the soil parameters used 4t the study. Parametric study has been carried out to examine the behavior of single pile, pile groups, raft and piled raft on the six zones under different variables and• conditions. Both linear and nonlinear behaviors have been taken into account when analyzing foundation elements. Results revealed that pile foundation is a good suitable foundation system in Port-Said city comparing with raft. The study bas presented guide lines and charts for piled raft that may be used in Port-Said. |
