Abstract

The goal of this work is to create an emotionally sensitive Virtual Human (VH) character that able to show persuasive body expressions based on its emotional state. Motivation of this is the inadequate performance of VHs involved in most Virtual Reality (VR) environments. One of the drawbacks that prevent the realism to VR is that the involved VH characters are showing fixed expressions controlled by pre-programmed algorithms regardless of the character’s emotional state. This makes the VH character unaware of what is happening around it, and subsequently affects the overall believability. While some recent researchers focus on facial expressions, our work focuses particularly on body expressions, which are more difficult to synthesis due to the high complexity of the human body structure. The proposed approach incorporates some psychological theories, and represents the different emotional aspects; emotions, mood and personality using a computational model.
