Abstract

Cancer of oral cavity and oropharynx is one of the commonest cancers of head and neck region. It is ranked as the 8th most common cancer worldwide. Smoking and alcohol drinking are the predominant risk factors.
The aim of this work was hospital based registration of the malignant tumors of the oral cavity (excluding bone and odontogenic tumours) in Ain Shams University Hospitals in the period from 2001-2005, in order to confirm the histopathological diagnosis and to detect the relative frequency in relation to the total malignant tumors.
The cases of the study were registered from the pathology departments of Ain Shams University Hospital, Ain Shams University Specialized Hospital and Faculty of Dentistry of Ain Shams University in the period from 2001-2005.
Revision of the slides for histopathological evaluation was done , also the available clinical data as regards age, sex and presentation were collected from files of Ain Shams Hospitals during the period from 2001-2005.
The study included 65 cases; all of them were primary malignant tumors of oral cavity and oropharynx.
The results of the study showed that the total number of malignant tumors of oral cavity and oropharynx represented approximately 1% of all malignant tumors. Concerning the age of the patients, it ranged from 17 to 76 years except only one case aged 3 years (a case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma). The mean age was 53.9 years. The commonest age group was from 41-60 years representing 56.9%, followed by the age group from 61-76 years representing 30.8%.
This registry comprised 44 male cases representing 67.7% and 21 female cases representing 32.2% with a male to female ratio about 2.1:1.
Concerning the site of tumor, the tongue was the most common malignant tumor of oral cavity and oropharynx representing 38.5%, followed by the tonsils representing 21.5% of all cases.
Histopathological examination revealed that squamous cell carcinoma was the commonest malignant tumor representing 72% of the malignant tumors of the oral cavity alone, and representing 60% of malignant tumors of oral cavity and oropharynx, followed by Non Hodgkin lymphoma representing 26.2%. Malignant tumors of minor salivary glands were 5 cases (7.7%). Basal cell carcinoma were 3 cases (4.6%). Soft tissue tumors were represented only by one case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (1.5%). No metastatic tumors were found.
Concerning squamous cell carcinoma, the most common site was the tongue (59%), the most common age was from 41-60 years (56.4%), it was more in males with a male to female ratio (2.5:1) and the most common encoutered grade was grade II (64.1%).
Concerning Non Hodgkin lymphoma, the most common site was the tonsil (70.6%), the most common age was from 41-60 (58.8%), it was more in males with a male to female ratio (1.8:1) and the most common encoutered type was diffuse large cell lymphoma (47%).
