Abstract Many natural changes face the railway networks around the world for example earthquakes, typhoons and floods. The most common and widespread of all natural disasters affecting railway industry is floods and it’s found to be the first cause of railway bridge failures. In Egypt; the quina-safaga rail lines is found to be the most rail subjected to floods. Several design efforts is done in trial to resist the damage effect of the flood on railway bridges, the most common used method to resist flood crossing railway networks in Egypt is culverts. Culverts also are found to be a weak defender against flood forces. A hydraulic and a structural analysis on the railway track structures is done in order to analyze the flood behavior and forces around the structure. Finally, each element of the track structure is discussed to reach an optimum solution based on the analysis in order to dissipate the flood energy than resist it. Final conclusions and optimum model is represwented in the last chapter. |
