Abstract

despite the availability of treatment, diabetes mellitus is a major emerging clinical and public health problem in Egypt. The prevalence of diabetes in Egypt is 11%. Type 2 diabetes is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Objectives: To determine the risk factors that may be associated with diabetes and to detect undiagnosed diabetics among high risk group. Methods: Cross sectional study was carried out on 120 participant in ElSaadwa family health unit by using family files to detect high risk group of diabetes and then using (1)questionnaire. (2)measuring blood pressure and BMI. (3)measuring fasting blood glucose, repeated on a separate day if the value was greater than 110 mg\dl.
Results: The most significant predictors for diabetes are persons over 40 year’s age, positive family history of diabetes, history of hypertension and obesity.
Conclusion: Early detection of diabetes is very important as diabetes is frequently diagnosed when there is complication, so the primary care will have an increasing responsibility for primary prevention and early detection of diabetes.
