Abstract This is a survey study (in the form of questionnaire) of the smoking habits among the chest physicians and their attitudes towards smoking. This study included 150 subjects from them 111 (74%) were males and 39 (26%) were females. from that survey the following were obtained: Prevalence of smoking habit was 33.3%. The prevalence of smoking among males was 41.4% and among females was 10.3%. The peak age of smokers was 31-40 years. The smoking is more prevalent among residents. Most of smokers work in general hospital . The prevalence of symptoms was more among smokers than ex-smokers. Most of smokers have positive family history. Most of smoker smoke for pleasure. Duration of smoking of most of them is (10-15y). The preferred type of smoking is cigarette smoking. Most of cigarette smoker start smoking at the age (20-25)y. Most of cigarette smokers start smoking sharing with friends. Most of cigarette smokers smoke anywhere. Most of cigarette smokers smoke after a meal. Most of them smoke (20-25) cigarettes per day. Most of water pipe smoker smoke water pipe at the age (20-25) year. Most of water pipe smokers smoke sharing with friends. Most of water pipe smokers smoke at open area. Most of water pipe smokers smoke occasionally. Most of smokers have chronic cough. Smoking affects on the health of most of smokers. Most of smokers inform their patients about smoking. Most of smokers did not care when their patients know about their smoking habit. 50% of smokers has the ability to quit. Most of them want to quit caring for health. 44% of smokers did not try to quit. Most of smokers think that change in habits helps to quit smoking. The most effective method for smoking cessation is pharmacological therapy especially nicotine patch. Most of them ask the patients about smoking and inform them about available methods for quitting . Most of them did not refer the patient to specialized smoking therapy centers. Most of them did not apply smoking cessation program for their patients. Most of them spend less than 1 min with the patients talking about smoking cessation. Most of them see that physician’s smoking in medical practice areas is unaccepted. Most of them see that physicians are seen as role models by the patients. Most of them see that smoking must not be permitted anywhere in medical practice areas. |
