Abstract Mitral valve prolapse is one of the most prevalent cardiac abnormalities which affect up to 5% of general population and 17%of young women and girls. It has a well-recognized association with heritable connective tissue disorders including Marfan syndrome, Ehiers-Danlos syndrome, osteogenesis imperfecta, and pseudoxanthdma elasticurn.75’77 It is a multifactorial valvular abnormality that can be caused by histological abnormalities of valvular tissue, geometric disparities between the left ventricle and mitral valve, or various connective tissue disorders. Leaflet thickening and redundancy, known as myxomatous degeneration, is the most common and clinically important of these abnormalities. Myxomatous degeneration is characterised grossly by leaflet thickening and redundancy with interchordal hooding, chordal elongation, and annular dilatation. N7,3,75 Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) should he accepted not as a single entity but as a spectrum of abnormalities with various clinical, echocardiographic, and pathological features. 102 Tissue 1)oppler imaging, which uses Doppler to quantify the velocity of tissue rather than blood, has been available as a clinical tool for over a decade.’56 Pulse wave-tissue Doppler provides a spectral display of the peak tissue velocities with tissue velocities in the y-axis and time in the x-axis. An advantage of pulsed iDE is an improved temporal resolution and the ability to qizanti1’ peak rather than mean myocardial velocities. It does not require offline analysis and provides instantaneous display of the spectral Doppler information. 63 The aim of this study was to assess the pattern of tissue Doppler imaging in patients with mitral valve prolapse The study was performed in the Echo lab. Cardiology department, Menofiya university hospital in the period between May 2005 to October 2006 Forty patients with MV1 were included in this study, 22 with mild and moderate MR , 18 with no MR and twenty five apparently healthy age and gender matched individuals were included as a control group. |
