Abstract Intraperitonial injection of rats with streptozotocin (50 mg/kg body weight) resulting in observed changes in levels of glucose, lipid profiles, total proteins, uric acid and creatinine and activities of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase in plasma and a significant increase in the oxidative damage of liver tissue through increased malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and decreased both reduced glutathione (GSH) concentration and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Treatment of rats with curcumin (100 mg/kg body weight in phosphate beffer saline), artichoke leaf extract (800 mg/kg body weight) and artichoke powder (138 g/kg ration) for 8wks reversed the changed biochemical parameters with more pronounced effect induced by artichoke powder. |
