Abstract Some toxicological and pharmacological . studies were carried out on Hypericum perforatum; which is commonly used in folk medicine. The aquoeus and ethanolic extracts caused no mortalities till 5000 mg/kg b.wt. in mice, both extracts showed significant anti-inflammatory, analgesic and diurefic effect, but didn’t show antipyretic effect. The plant extracts showed no significant effect on blood glucose level in normal and diabetic rats. Both extracts showed significant hepatoprotective effect on the intoxicated liver in rats. In addition, the both extracts showed significant antidepressant effect. Prolonged administration of the plant extracts for two months showed no adverse effect on blood picture, but there were slight changes in the serum biochemical parameters, with no changes in body weight gain of the tested groups when compared to the control group. The plant extracts showed in inhibitory activity in the isolated rabbit intestine and on the uterine mofilty of rats at difterent stages of estrus cycle. |
