Abstract
Aim of the study: to determine the effect of a protocol of nursing intervention on recovery outcomes of patients undergoing chemotherapy. Material and method:the study has been conducted in out patient clinics of Oncology Department, Menofia University Hospital.A sample of convenient sample of 60 adult patients receiving chemotherapy assigned alternatively & randomly into two equal groups. 30patients for each group (study &control).Study group (I) received chemotherapy submitted to the proposed nursing management in addition to routine nursing intervention.Control group (II) has been exposed to routine hospital care.Experimental design was used to collect data pertinent to study.Tools:-(I) chemotherapy knowledge assessment sheet,(II) Nuritional assessment sheet,(III) Inventory functional status by (Tulman et al., 1991)and(IV) body image scale by (Shokir,1998). Results : Knowledge related to chemotherapy & side effects, and its management had significantly improved for the study group as compared to the control group through study phases (P0.001).The result also revealed that (30.0%) of control group had low body image before start of chemotherapy, it become worsen (86.7%) after receiving it ,as there was statistical significant difference between both groups regarding to body image at post intervention (after first,second cycle and two months later),(P0.001). Moreover there was significant difference regarding to functional ability among study & control group, post intervention (after first, second cycle and two months later),(P0.001).Conclusions: Protocol of nursing intervention has a positive effect on improving : (a) Knowledge & skill related to chemotherapy side effect ; (b)reduction of chemotherapy side effects ;(c) improving of utritional status;(d), improving body image & functional ability in study group. Recommendations : Developing a structured educational program for patients and families about management of chemotherapy side effect should be available to each patients before the start of treatment.
