Abstract With the rapid development of power electronics, Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices have been proposed and implemented in power systems. FACTS devices can be used to control power flow and enhance system stability. There is an increasing interest in using FACTS devices in the operation and control of power systems. However, their coordination with the Evolutionary Programming Techniques can be used in aiding of power system balanced restoration, optimization and control. The following areas of research are achieved in this thesis : Optimal allocation of FACTS devices in power system using Eigenvalues/Eigenvectors Technique: Weakest bus location is easily determined as the most remote bus from the generator in both electrical and physical terms and it is the “most electrically remote from a point of constant voltage or point of controllable voltage”. The weakest bus could be obtained by looking at right eigenvectors associated with the smallest eigenvalue of the reduced Jacobian matrix. The bus with the maximum value of the eigenvector is the weakest bus in the system. Implementation of SVC in power systems to enhance the steady state voltage stability: In this topic, the benefits of using Static VAR Compensator (SVC) in multi-machine systems are utilized in order to improve the steady state voltage stability. Implementation of SVC in power systems to enhance the transient stability: In this topic, the benefits of using Static VAR Compensator (SVC) in multi-machine systems are utilized in order to improve the dynamic performance and voltage profile of the power system. |
