Abstract

The main aim of this study is to investigate the history, role and different aspects of the cult of the scorpion goddess Selkis, from the early Dynastic Period to the start of the Ptolemaic Period. This is accomplished through the survey of her accessible scenes, texts and monuments, followed by a detailed examination of the source evidence. The study provides an illumination of the interrelations between funerary, medical, and magical practice in ancient Egypt.
The aim of the study is fulfilled through ten chapters. The first chapter deals with the royal and non-royal tomb scenes of Selkis in the Theban Necropolis. This includes the appearance of Selkis in the scenes of the Books of the Afterlife in these tombs. The second chapter contains the appearance of Selkis in scenes or texts of the funerary, and the royal or non-royal Canopic equipment. It also provides a survey of the coffins and sarcophagi with scenes and texts of Selkis. The third chapter contains the texts related to Selkis in the Pyramid Texts, the Coffin Texts, and the Book of the Dead. The fourth chapter contains the texts and scenes of Selkis on the magical and medical papyri, the Mythological papyri, and the Forms of Re papyri. The fifth chapter contains the scenes of Selkis in temples, and her appearance in the Sed-festival, while, the sixth chapter contains the statues and amulets of Selkis, and her appearance on any other miscellaneous scenes or texts.
