Abstract The present study aimed at investigating effectiveness of the task-based learning approach in developing EFL speaking and writing skills for first year secondary school students. The sample of the study included seventy-six female students enrolled in two classes in El-Shohadaa Secondary school for girls in Menoufia Governate in the Academic year 2009-2010. They were assigned to two groups; an experimental group (No.38) and a control group (No.38). The experimental group was taught using the task-based learning approach where the control group was taught using the traditional method followed in teaching EFL speaking and writing skills. The study adopted the experimental pretest-posttest experimental/ group research design. The instruments of the study included a communication test that was divided into two sections, speaking and writing test. After experimentation, both groups were tested using the same instruments to find out the effectiveness of the TBL approach in developing students’ overall EFL speaking and writing skills. Data were treated statistically, analyzed and discussed. Results revealed significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental and those of the control groups in EFL speaking and writing skills. The study concluded that the task-based learning approach was effective in developing students’ EFL speaking and writing skills. The study recommended the use of task-based learning approach in designing English syllabus for secondary stage in teaching EFL speaking and writing skills. The study also suggested further research in the area of task-based learning approach in teaching listening and reading skills. |
