Abstract Whenever the bed elevation or the size or shape of the cross-section of an open channel changes along its length, transitions are provided as a link between the original and the new channel section. Such changes are often required in natural and artificial channels at bridges, weirs, barrages, river training works, and other related structures. Transitions may be classified into three categories brhorizontal, vertical, and transitions where bed width and bed elevation are both changing •This research is concerned with gradually contracting subcritical flow transitions of short length in which the friction head loss is negligible. The main objective of the present research was to brstudy the effect of constructing horizontal transitions on the water surface profile and the mean velocity variation bralong the channel length |
