Abstract
The individuals who reach the age of 65 years have been identified by our society as the elderly, Geriatrics is defined as the medicine of the future, how to control the onset of diseases, and how to reduce their severity and duration, Geriatric nursing is concerned with studying the characteristics and diseases affecting old people in order to help them, In Egypt, the percentage of aged people, over 60 years, of the total population has increaseifrom 5.1% in 1950 to 6.1% in 1990, and the sick elderlies represent a greater percentage reaching around 15- 20%, In Egypt, also .this POpulation was about 2.91 million in 1970 and 3.76 in 1985, and is Expected to reach almost 6.00 million by the year 2000, In 1994, the Statistical Information Center in Port Said-found that, the total population of the elderly was 34235 persons. Hypertension is a common disease among the elderly as approximately 40% of the population, over the age of 65 years, have high blood pressure, (Garrett, 1993). Smelter and Bare , (1996) mentioned that the incidence of liypertension increases with age, as they found that 50 to 60 percent of their clients over 50 years of age have a blood pressure over 140\90 mmHg.
