Abstract 5-Flurouracil (5-FU) is one of the oldest chemotherapeutic drugs. It is an active drug against many cancers such as basal cell carcinoma. This study consisted of 38 patients (40 ears), 25 ears with early attic cholesteatoma (retraction pocket filled with debris) and 15 ears with granular myringitis after informed consents. After cleaning the debris, 2-3 ml of 5% 5-FU topical cream was applied on the outer surface of cholesteatoma sac or the outer side of the drum transmeatally under the microscope three to six times with an interval of two weeks. In 25 ears diagnosed as cholesteatoma were treated by 5-FU topical cream and the clinical efficacy was evaluated, good effect was seen in 8 ears (32%), fair effect was observed in 6 ears(24%) and poor was in 11 ears (44%). In 15 ears diagnosed as granular myringitis were treated by 5-FU topical cream and the clinical efficacy was evaluated, good effect was seen in 8 ears (53, 3%), fair effect was observed in 5 ears (33, 3%) and poor effect was in 2 ears (13, 3%). |
