المستخلص This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of rational emotive therapy and assertiveness training in reducing social phobia of faculty of education students. The study sample involved 467 (192 males, 275 females) college students from third year, all specializations. Social Phobia Scale (SPS), and irrational belifes scale (IBS) prepared by the researcher, assertive skills scale (by Tareef Shawky, 1998), and rational emotive program and the assertiveness training program were administered on the study sample. The two programs were administered on a clinical sample of 36 students from both genders. The treatment sample was divided into two experimental groups and a control group. The results of the study showed a positive correlation between social phobia and irrational beliefs. There was a negative correlation between social phobia and assertive skills. Females were more social phobics than males. The rational emotive program and assertiveness training program proved effective in reducing the social phobia of college students. There were no statistically significant differences between the two experimental groups. The follow up results showed statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the rational emotive therapy group on the social phobia scale after therapy and after one month. The same results were replicated with the assertiveness group. |
