Abstract

Obesity is now the most common clinical risk factor in obstetric practice and it should be considered as high risk state because it is associated with many complications such as hypertension, diabetus mellitus, macrosomia and obstructed labour. All these complications can cause many hazards on mother, fetus or both.
Normal length of gestation is 260-293 days from last menstrual period. Several factors are known to affect the duration of pregnancy, including parity, socio-demographic characteristics, medical complications, previous preterm delivery, cigarette smoking, maternal age and others.
Leptin is a 167-aminoacid peptide hormone, which is mainly produced by adipocytes, and its levels in the circulation are increased in proportion to fat mass. Leptin is an adipocyte-derived hormone that plays a critical role in energy homeostasis and lipid metabolism
The aim of the work was to study the association between maternal obesity and length of gestation and the serum leptin level were also evaluated at 20 and 37 weeks of gestation.
Our study was carried out on one hundred and twenty five women ranging between 20-30 years admitted to the antenatal care unit of El Shatby Maternity University Hospital. The pregnant women were in twenty weeks of gestation. They were divided into five equal groups according to WHO classification of body mass index (BMI).
Group A: normal BMI (18.5 - 24.9).
Group B: pre obese (25.0 - 29.9).
Group C: obese class I (30.0 - 34.9).
Group D: obese class II (35.0 - 39.9).
Group E: obese class III (>= 40.0).
