Abstract

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy induced hypertension observed after the 20th week of pregnancy in a previously normotensive pregnant woman accompanied by significant proteinuria) urinary excretion of 0.3 g protein in a 24-h specimen). Blood pressure usually returns to baseline within days to weeks after delivery. It is the disease of theories as the exact nature of the disease is still unknown.
The aim of the work was to determine the association between the increased body mass index and the risk of preeclampsia. Also the possible role of serum leptin was evaluated.Severe preeclampsia was diagnosed in 2 cases of group C (8% of cases), in one case (4% of cases) and in one case of group E (4% of cases). The overall incidence of preeclampsia in cases with increased BMI was 9%. The present study concluded that increased BMI is associated with 1.8 fold increase in risk of preeclampsia than the general population.
The present study showed that serum uric acid was significantly higher in the preeclamptic cases than the normotensive cases at 28 and 37 weeks. Severe preeclamptic cases had a statistically significant elevated serum uric acid level than the mild preeclamptic cases at the 37th week only.
