Abstract

Dementia is an important health and social care problem and is one of the main causes of disability in later life. The number of families affected by dementia will dramatically increase over the next five decades. Despite the implication for health and social care services in the future, the overwhelming majority of care for people with dementia takes place away from health care settings. Providing informal care for someone with dementia can be psychologically, physically and financially expensive (Gallagher-Thompson et al. 2003).
Aim of the study:
The aim of this study was to assess problems and needs of the family caregiver dealing with demented person through:
- Assess knowledge, attitude and practice of the family caregiver about problems and needs of demented person.
- Identify problems and needs of the family caregivers of demented persons.
- Signify role of the community health services in improving care of demented persons.
Subjects and methods:
Research design:
A descriptive study design was used in this study.
Setting:
This study was conducted at the neuro-psychiatric out-patient clinics at Mansoura General and University Hospitals and Ain-Shams University Hospitals as those hospitals represented Dakahlia and Cairo governorates.
Sampling:
A convenient sample was selected within one year (January-December, 2005). A total number of 60 demented persons and 60 family caregivers were included in this study; 32 demented persons and their family caregivers from Cairo Governorate and 28 demented persons and their family caregivers from Dakahlia Governorate. Two groups of subjects were involved in the study; group a) included demented persons, while the other group b) included family caregivers for demented persons.
