Abstract

The color distribution in post-consumer glass municipal cullet waste is not uniform and accordingly the mixed color cullet in the production of colorless commercial soda-lime-silicate glasses may cause a defect or inconsistency in color of the final product. It would
be desirable to develop a process for re-using mixed colored glass, where in mixed colored cullet can be re-used without any problem of new glass product. The present work comprises studies on the effect of municipal glass cullet wastes in the production of colorless glasses. Some types of decolorizing agents are applied in this work to produce colorless glass from municipal glass cullet that contains
high iron oxide content. The results obtained in this work show that
the Fe ions present in the prepared glasses are largely in the form of
Fe3+ ions. XRF, ESR, UV-Visible absorption and transmission, and
infrared analysis are applied to investigate the prepared glasses. The
corrosive behavior is studied by the grain method for some samples of commercial soda –lime- silicate glasses doped with varied amounts of municipal glass cullet. The weight loss of the prepared glass by distilled water, 0.1N HCl solution, and 0.1N NaOH solution are recorded, the study displays the most effective solution towards the prepared glasses to show the best method for recycling the municipal glass cullet waste.
The results reveal that all the samples have a strong ultraviolet charge transfer absorption consisting of two or three bands at wavelengths of 228 – 232, 274 – 278 and 304 – 309 nm.
The excellent optical transmission observed in the glasses is related
to both decolorizing agent and the content of municipal glass cullet.
It is noted that the UV transmission of Se – Co doped glasses are lower than that Mn and/or Ce oxides. In the case of the La or Sm oxides, the transmission recorded its highest value even with the high content of the municipal glass cullet wastes. The ESR intensity of Fe3+ signal remains unchanged in all samples. The IR data
illustrate the appearance of characteristic absorption bands due to
silicate chains for each group of glasses including the following
spectral ranges ~ 470, 773 – 1049, 1382 – 1617, 2323, 2919, 3436 cm-1. The results indicate the ability to control the color of glasses by the addition of cullet wastes to commercial glass composition.
The results reveal also that phosphate glass based on the calcium phosphate row material is an ideal candidate because of its excellent mechanical strength and chemical stability.
