المستخلص

Influenza is a zoonotic disease, infecting a wide variety of warm-blooded animals, including birds and mammals. According to nucleoprotein and matrix proteins, influenza viruses are classified into three types; A, B, and type C. Influenza A viruses are responsible for a major disease problem in birds, as well as in humans. The main goals of this study were:
1) Isolation and characterization of the causative pathogen that invaded Egypt in February 2006 causing a great loss in poultry field and transmitted to human population causing deaths.
2) Establishment of an in vitro tissue culture system for studying the susceptibility spectrum of different domestic animals to the avian influenza (H5N1) viral infection as a first step for viral infection control.
3) Investigating the behaviour of avian influenza (H5N1) viral infection on different cell lines.
4) Studying the persistence and duration of infectivity of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 viruses in water against Biomophlaria alexandrina snails.
