Abstract The motors being used on modem industrial systems are becoming increasingly large in size . Starting of these large motors , especially when working on isolated alternator , produces a transient voltage depression that can substantially reduce the motor output torque while severely influencing the operation of any connected load . This study highlights the use of shunt capacitors to improve the characteristics of isolated network during the starting of large induction motor . , The analysis of the isolated system is carried out, firstly without using the shunt capacitors and secondly with different sizes of shunt capacitors . The alternator voltage variation, motor current characteristics, capacitor characteristics and dynamic performance are analyzed at different values of alternator field current. The suitable value of the required shunt capacitor is obtained to maintain the output voltage at the rated value during both starting and running conditions of the induction motor . The capacitor value is determined by two methods, the first is by compensating the alternator reactive volt ampere, while in the |
