Abstract
The effect of age on metotic index was studied in some continuing renewal cell systems of albino rat, specifecally in the small intestine and skin.
In this study colchicine was used which has the property of arresting cell division in metaphase if it is injected subcutaneously at a rate of 0.1 mg per 100 gm body weight. Consequently, the mitotic index can be estimated through counting the number of blocked metaphases out of the total number of nuclei. According the results the most interesting conclusion was the linear relationship between age and mitotic index of intestinal crypts in the growth period lying between O-and 30 days which is approximated mathematically by the previouly mentioned equation. Although the correlation coefficiant is very close to 1 this does not mean that the correlation between the two variables is perfectly linear since the number of samples taken during this period are some what few. Therefore, it is preferable in the future to intensify the number of selected sample in this period to get a greater confidence for representing this relationship more accurately.
