Abstract The area of gebl umm gidri covers about 34km2 in the basement complex of the northern part of the eastern desert of Egypt between latitudes 26 56to 27 00Nand longitudes 33 34 and 33 38EGebel Umm Gidri is generally considers as belongingto the important granitic plutons widely distributed in the eastern desert and grouped collectively as: Gattarian Granites .Umm gidri pluton covers a roughly circular area with irregular boundaries and with its heighest peak rises to 1068m above sea level. The pluton is intersected by few numbers of acidic ,intermediate ,basic and lamprophyric dykes Different types of weathering are quite common and recognized among Umm Gidri granitic rocks. Columnar weathering usually results in the production of rectangular blocks followinq two sets of perpendicular joints. All stages of bouldery weathering could be recognized in the field from preliminary splitting of rocks along joints to the formation of boulders. Exfoliation or onion-skin weathering accompanied by caverns and Pit-holes are not uncommon. |
