Abstract

Maize stalk rot diseases are caused by different pathogens in the majority of the Maize cultivatedareas.
A characteristic basal stalk rot disease which usually attacks plants at the soil level is considered serious in the warm-climate areas as it causes the affected plants to topple over and die The disease was recorded in different parts of the world. The present work was conducted to throu some light on certain biological aspects of the pathogen and its effects on SOme maize and sorghum cultivars.
The obtained results can be summarized as follows:
1- four pathogenic fungal isolate (disignated as |P5,P6, P7 and P8) were secured from 4 naturally infected plants. They were all similar in cultural and morphological characters. All isolates were indentified as Pythium butleri subr. Isolates varied in severity to maize stalks. Isolste P5 was least virulent, whereas isolate P8 was the most virulent. Iso1ates P6 and P7 were intermediates.
2- In all soil inoculation treatments the maize roots (Hybrid-19) remained heal thy GS in the control Hence, it was concluded that fungal isolates could not affect the root system…
