Abstract

This research was conducted under laboratory and glasshouse conditions through the laboratory of department of plant pathology of Faculty of Agriculture of Minia University during 1992 - 1995. Plant materials of seven banana varieties namely Basri . Grande Naine . Hindi. Maghrabi . Poyo , Valery and Wil!iams previously proved to be infected with BMV were assigned as a source of tissues in al! experiments of this work. The main results could be summarized as follows:
1.BMV is transmitted by A. gossypii Glover and BBTV is transmitted by P. nigronervosa Coq.
2. The percentage of BMV and BBTV-free plantlets resulting from the small size apical meristem i. e. 0.6 mm was greater than those from the moderate size ones i.e. 0.8 mm and those from the large size ones i.e. 1.0 mm. In case of BMV they were 36.59 % , 24.24 % and 20.59 % for these three lengths, respectively. But in case of BBTV they were 37.50 % , 31.43 % and 20.00 % for these three lengths, respectively.
3.Depending on banana variety, the percentage of virus-free plantlets resulting from the small apical meristems ranged from 25.00 % to 50.00 %, when the moderate size the percentage of virus¬ free plantlet resulting ranged from 16.67 % to 40.00 % . The opposites were ranged from 12.50 % to 33.33 % when using the large size apical meristems.
4.Lateral buds were excised from underground corms of banana cultivars. All materials were grown at the greenhouse. After removing the radical system, the buds were planted in 15 cm pots containing sterile soil. The pots were maintaied for 1-21 days at 40°C ( in case of BMV ) and maintained for 1 - 4 months at 36°C (in case of BBTV ). having a relative humidity of 80 % and 16 h photoperiods ( Ca 2000 lux folorocent light ). Control plants were maintained under similar grow1h conditions at 30°C:!: 2 °C for the same period of time. subsequently. outer leaves were removed from both treated and control materials.
