Abstract

This work was aimed to study blood levels of vitamin D, calcitonin and some other bone metabolic markers in postmenopausal osteoporotic women and to find any correlation between the level of these markers and the severity of osteoporosis.
This work has been done in the Internal Medicine, Biochemistry
and Radiology Departments, Zagazig University Hospitals from May
2003 to May 2007.It was planned to study serum levels of vitamin D,
calcitonin and some other bone metabolic markers in postmenopausal
osteoporotic women. It was also planned to study any correlation between
levels of these markers and the severity of osteoporosis.
It included 66 postmenopausal women and 10 apparently healthy
women from Bilbeis city, Sharkia government, Egypt. Women were
classified according to the parity status into the following groups:
Group I : It comprised 58 multiparous postmenopausal women
with an age range from 48-76 years.
Group II : It comprised 8 nulliparous postmenopausal women with
an age range from 45-66 years.
Group III : It comprised 10 apparently healthy women as controls
with an age range from 24-40 years.
All participants were subjected to the following:
• Full history taking and detailed clinical examination.
• Routine laboratory investigations:
1. Complete blood picture.
2. Liver and kidney function tests.
3. Urine and stool analysis.
4. Fasting blood glucose.
