Abstract

A new steroidal alkaloid compound withanine C22H33N2O4 was solated from fruits of the Egyptain ecotype, Withania Somnifera wild plants, by extraction with CHCl3,in 0.87% of the fruit dry weight yield, and was purified on a short Silica-gel C.C. and preparative TLC, using benzene as a solvent. The specific optical rotation of the purified withanine[a]27D = - 15ºC , (C = 0.0082, CHCl3 + MeOH) . The structure of withanine has been elucidated as:
6.6.8.9-tetramethyl 15 methanolyl-17-isopropyl-14.22-epoxide(l-keto-413-diaza-7-oxo-15-ene cyclopentenohydrophenanthrene (see Fig. 37 The elucidation of Withanine structure is based on extensive spectroscopic studies, as well as by its fragmentation pattern under electron impact. The configuration at C-6 and C-22 has been determined by 1H.NMR data. The CHCl3 crude extract of Withania somnifera fruits and withanine were found to be active against the stored grains adult beetles (Tribolium Castaneum).
