Abstract
This thesis reviews the various factors \”hich should be considered when selecting the proper propulsion machine¬ry for merchant ships. It outlines the selection procedure, which involves economical and technical comparisons,and sho\’,s how the various types of machinery available today eet the requirements of different types of ships. The work begins by reviewing the projected growth in world tonnage up to 1990 identifying both the general trend and the ship types \”hich are merging.
Changes in machinery installation design and future developments in machinery are discussed and related to the current and future share of the marlcet for each type of prime movers.
An economic analysis to compare the annual operating costs of various marine pow’er plants is computed taking into consideration the further changes in fuel oil price and other costs since 1973 till the yElar 1980. Included
in the total operating costs are acqu~sition and financing costs, fuel oil costs, maintenance anq repair costs, lubricatill,O; oil costs, crerelated expenses and insurance costs. The major technical factors influencing the optimum selection of marine pow”er plants are also analyzed and emphasized by typical examples.
The thesis concludes with a briet look into the future for the prediction of the impact of the energy crisis on future ship machinery.
