Abstract Aim of the work The aim of this work is to study the effect of inhaled beclomathasone dispropionate, 1000 microgram/day and also the effect of its discontinuation on acute exacerbation, lung function parameters and arterial blood gases in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Conclusion and recommendations 1- Inhaled steroids (1000 microgram/day) are beneficial in stable COPD patients as it improves both FEV1 and FVC after 3 months of treatment which is maintained for 6months. 2- Inhaled steroids also decrease the frequency of exacerbations in these patients. 3- The beneficial effect of inhaled steroids is more prominent in cases of severe and very severe bronchial obstruction. 4- Inhaled steroids have no significant effect on either small airways function or arterial blood gases. 5- So, we recommend its use in stable COPD patients with severe and very severe obstruction, further investigations are needed to confirm its effect on mild bronchial obstruction. |
