Abstract

The purpose of this research is to study the best conditions under which petroleum oils can be removed from polluted waste waters applying the induced air flotation technique (IAF).
Highly stabilized oil in water (0/W) emulsions have been prepared. An important contribution of this work is the development and recommendation of the standard method which has been used to create and quantitavelycharacterize emulsions for use and test in the experimental flotation work. Emulsion stabilities were determined experimentally from static test and quantified in terms of stable rate constant. This constant was found to be 0.0005 hr-1 for highly stable emulsion.
Experiments were carried out to remove oil from emulsions in a batch column of 10 cm in diameter and 150 cm height. The column performance has been strongly affected by the method of introducing air. The variables studied were the type of air distributor (either single hole or multihole), flotation time, liquid height, superficial air velocity, pH of emulsions, water salinty, Oil concentration and surfactant applied.
