Abstract the goal of the present study is to investigate the exact mechanism of lithium-induced hyperglycemia and inhibition of serum insulin level. parallel studies with some other alkali metals ( cesium and rubedium) which share some physicochemical charcteristics with lithium will be done. the role of some alpha and beta adrenoceptor antagonists in modulating these effects will be studied. in conclusion , the effects of lithium as well as cesium and rubidium would seem to involve not only circulating catecholamines but also the stimulation of the sympathetic innervation of the islets since the inhibition of IRI release was markedly reduced by alpha2- adrenoceptor antagonist, yohimbine. however, detailes of the underlying mechanisms remain obscure. |
