Abstract

the aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of syndrom of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion among septic neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care unit
(NICU) at el shatby maternity hospital.
Sepsis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the neonatal period. Sepsis neonatorum involves the blood stream although spread to different organs is possible. Many laboratory findings such as leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, and electrolyte disturbances are commonly encountered. Hyponatremia is commonly seen when sepsis involves central nervous system as in meningitis.
Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion is not usually reported in neonates because of difficulty in diagnosis. The diagnosis depends mainly on finding of hyponatremia, serum hypo-osmolality and relative hyperosmolality of the urine. In this study, serum uric acid is taken as parameter of the diagnosis.
The study was conducted on one hundred newborn admitted to El-Shatby Hospital. Sepsis work up and investigations of SIADH was done.
