Abstract The main trunk of the middle rectal artery is inferior to the rectal stalk and could be endangered when the rectum is separated from the seminal vesicle, prostate, or vagina. These findings may explain why some surgeons feel that the lateral ligaments may be cut with impunity. The middle rectal artery is usually absent in the female. It is probably replaced by the uterine artery. In the male, the chief beneficiaries of the artery are the rectal musculature and the prostate gland (8). |
